Commodore Rob Hermans

MAYLANDS Yacht Club's Commodore is Rob Hermans. Rob has been with the Club for many years and it's very exciting to have his experience at the helm at MYC.

"I started my sailing experience at Maylands Yacht Club in 1971 and sailed my first race at the regatta celebrating the opening of the new club house. The boat was a nine foot mini moth designed by Rear Commodore Curly Markey.

Moved to sailing scow moths build by Cliff Burton and Rob O’Sullivan. Who could not but improve, trying to chase these two legends of the class around the river.

Put my hand to building three scow moths and attended many moth national and world titles conducted across Australia. Involved at state level for the moth class taking on the positons of secretary, treasurer and president as well as committee positions at Maylands Yacht Club.

Around 1986 I joined the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club and sailed 14ft skiffs for about 12 years and did a stint as the state secretary for the 14ft association.

Always learning the ropes from many skilled skippers crewing on their keel yachts.

I gravitated back to Maylands in the 05/06 season sailing a laser and took up several positions in the management committee ranging from rear commodore sailing, secretary and sailing captain.

The current committee has such a wealth of knowledge. The committee consists of past commodores, life members and long standing flag officers. It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated and knowledgeable team."
