MAYLANDS Yacht Club has a new Commodore. Mimi Secco has been with the Club for a few years; firstly as an interested mother of a junior sailor, then as a member of the Management Committee, then gently nudged into the Vice Commodore role and this year assuming the Commodore role. She takes over from Steve Rose after he ably led the club for three years.
Mimi said: "It’s not my first experience in a voluntary committee but certainly one of the most engaging. I particularly like the mix of people who make up the Club and how everyone can be called upon to help out when needed. Being a business owner and a parent, I have a pragmatic approach to getting on with things. I’m keen to keep the Club “current”, so that means freshening up processes and welcoming new ideas while preserving the history of the Club.
"I love the way the Club gives my family a good reason to be outside as my husband and 12-year-old son are active Mirror sailors. I learnt some sailing skills crewing our keel boat many years ago and now being in a single-handed dinghy pushes me out of my comfort zone. I’m admittedly still a novice sailor, and look forward to improving my position in the Sabre fleet.
"My vision for the Club is to grow membership to a healthy level and keep members engaged with some sort of Club-related activity, be it sailing, time-keeping, support boat activity, or managing the very important sausage sizzle. MYC is as much a social outlet as a place to learn to sail or to race competitively."
The Management Committee consists of a group of elected members who give freely of their time to further the interests of the Club.
All committee and club members act in a voluntary capacity.
